Virginia

Calame

Community Volunteer Extraordinaire

Virginia Calame is a native Oklahoman.  She attended Central High School and graduated from OU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.  After teaching in Dallas, she returned to OKC to marry the love of her life, former OU football quarterback, Gene Calame.  They had two children, James and Cathy, both of whom are married with families, making her a grandmother several times over.

Virginia is the consummate organizer. When James attended Elementary, she became the PTA President. When Cathy needed swim lessons, it was not long before she became President of the Metropolitan Board of the YWCA. The family moved to Mustang, and she quickly served on the Economic Development Committee. Returning to OKC, she became a founding member of Quail Springs United Methodist Church where she is Chairman of Trustees and actively manages the property.  In fact, if you need in the building, she has the key. She also enjoyed serving as President of Oklahoma City Town Hall and the OU Tip In Club.

Virginia has been a 50-year member of Acorn, the first book club in Oklahoma, where she served as President three times.  She also ignited the love of reading with At-Risk children by recruiting and organizing 30 mentors for 20 years with Whiz Kids, an after-school program.

She is a proud member of PEO, O-Kee-Pa Book Club and the Lynda Tarpley tappers and still enjoys performing at the OKC Arts Festival.

When asked what she does for a living Virginia’s comment is, “I am a professional volunteer.”
