Director of Community Engagement, Oklahoma City Ballet
For more than thirteen years, Erica Portell has devoted her career at Oklahoma City Ballet to broadening access to the arts and deepening community connections through dance. She first joined the organization as a teaching artist in the School and Community Engagement Department, where she discovered her passion for working with marginalized and underserved communities. Since then, her efforts have touched thousands throughout the metro area-including children in public schools, Boys and Girls Clubs members, older adults, and participants in the Dance for Parkinson's program.
Before her tenure with Oklahoma City Ballet, Erica performed professionally on cruise ships, television, and in commercial venues, yet always felt drawn to use her artistry in service of others. Her dedication to equitable arts access has transformed the Ballet's community engagement initiatives, shaping inclusive opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of movement.
Among Erica's most fulfilling recent projects are the creation of sliding-scale adult classes that lower barriers to participation, the national recognition of Dance for Parkinson's, and the development of performance opportunities for thousands of children on stages across the metro. She has also helped lead prominent collaborations such as Spider Brings Fire with the Chickasaw Nation and Dia de los Muertos with Latino Community Development Agency and Tango Media— projects that celebrate cultural storytelling and collective identity through dance.
Outside her professional work, Erica cherishes time with her husband and four grown children, whose unwavering support fuels her creative pursuits. Known for her contagious enthusiasm, innovative vision, and steadfast commitment, Erica continues to champion dance as a catalyst for connection, inclusion, and transformation.
